CAFE' DELLA FONTANA IN MURISENGO

Deep in the heart of Monferrato lies Murisengo.  An historic hill top town 312 meters above sea level, it has an imposing castle with origins dating back to '200, whose distinctive silhouette fights with that of the nearby and more recent Villa Deati in a never ending battle to win landscape domination.   Home in the past to the founder of Lavazza coffee and today to approximately 1,500 inhabitants, Murisengo has a gentle and slightly more sophisticated charm than other villages nearby.

It also has café to match that is well worth a visit should you be passing this way, perhaps to catch the town's Fiera Del Tartufo which takes place on the 2nd and 3rd Sunday each November.

The Café Fontana is situated near to the Municipal square, opposite the little fountain.  Certainly come here for the coffee - Lavazza obviously - but be sure to order a slice of cake made fresh each day on-site by the owner and chef Michela.

My favorite is the apricot sponge but it can be a difficult toss up with the squashy, low lying chocolate cake.  If you don't have a sweet tooth, you can stop here for what we informally call a 'schishola'.  The Italian equivalent of a ploughmans lunch, the 'schishola' is made up of flat bread, cold cut meats like local salami and prosciutto crudo or cotto alongside a selection of cheeses, also local.  Best washed down with a glass of prosecco and away from the thieving hands of 'he who has ordered a cottoletta'.  Alternately ask for the dish of the day.  The cooking here is simple but extremely good, full of flavor with a light touch which extends to the prices.
