English Version
Supermarket Test

Waitrose, the supermarket of the English elite, is known throughout the UK for its well curated wine department. Who knows if we will ever have something similar in Italy. In the meantime, its worth a trip just to get hold of a bottle of the champagne made exclusively for Waitrose by the producer Alexandre Bonnet. A Blancs De Noir from the Riceys vineyard which is situated on the southern edge of the Champagne region. Deep yellow in colour, the champagne has a consistent structure with a lightly herby nose combined with notes of toasted brioche. A satisfying richness on the pallet does not detract from its striking freshness. The chalky clay combination of the ground where the Pinot Noir is grown brings out a striking performance from the grape, thanks also to the dedication of Alain Pailley, Alexandre Bonnet's oenologist, and to the fact that the grapes are all picked by hand. No bottle is allowed to leave Le Riceys before three years have gone by. The Rosé de Riceys is also available from Waitrose and may well be the most prestigious of the champagnes made by Alexandre Bonnet. The Blanc de Noir is a champagne of exellent quality which, in my opinion, offers good value for money with its reasonable eighteen pounds a bottle. Tasting it with me were: Margaret (I must say this has taken me by surprise. It is excellent.) Sue: (A champagne well able to hold its own beside other much better known labels) Susannah: (Hmm, delicious with a good mineral content. A well balanced champagne). I add that the surprise factor has an important part to play.
