A veritable Florentine banquet took place this weekend, reminiscent and faithful to the historical traditions of the city, with the opening of TASTE at the Leopolda Station the food fair organised by Pitti Immagine and curated by the Italian food journalist Davide Paolini, also known as the Gastronauta owing to his radio programme of the same name on Radio 24.
Over 250 producers were present displaying their wares on tall continuous white topped stands providing a smorgas board, taste experience of the best of Italy from across the territory, with much whisker licking by visitors reaching the end of each section.
But TASTE proved to be more than just a gastronomic journey, providing a feast for the eyes with some striking and, on occasions, breathtaking set designs.
Suspended signs identifying produce category and producer conjured up images of merchant guilds, whilst a wall of seed packets sprouted colour and symmetry, but the real star of the show was to be found in the restaurant hall.
Here a rainbow of jugs and glasses floated above the central food station where chefs bustled and hustled in the preparation of lunch on offer for 25 euro to eat at long, shared tables with fellow gourmets.
Not to be missed by anyone planning a trip to Florence next March, its never too early to plan.
