FIST FIGHTS OVER FISH EGGS DA VITTORIO

Approaching Da Vittorio from the road, the Sicilian restaurant looks simple enough, but don't be fooled by its beer garden exterior. A quick glance over the rickety fence reveals an enviable seafront position overlooking a long golden sandy beach leading to Porto Palo.

Step inside the newly added veranda and grab a table by the window. Looking out to the mediterranean is soothing even on a grey day. The decoration is simple, white being the key, allowing the focus to remain firmly on the view. The staff are friendly, totally committed and well informed as this is very much a family affair.

Should you be lucky enough to sneak into the kitchen you might catch sight of Vittorio's wife Francesca peeling potatoes or his son Ignazio rustling up vongole and tomato sauce, whist Vittorio staggers in with a freshly caught fish to be cooked for the punters some of whom have taken the ferry from Civitavecchia just to have lunch, whilst other's have flown in as far afield as Finland.

We tucked in to a delicious array of starters which included swordish carpaccio on a bed of fresh fennel and orange, Bream fishballs, Sicilian Sarde (sardines) a beccafico, tiny mouthwatering fried squid, red Mazara prawns, seafood salad which consisted of tender chunks of octopus, potatoe and parsley.

After which, as we eyed the door content with all we had slowly tasted and discussed and shared, we were brought a wonderful pasta cooked with Dory fish eggs, tomatoes and prawns.

Despite our initial, and slightly pathetic protestations that we were already full, it was so moorish we ended up fighting for the last spoonfull. We did however manage to ward of offers of homemade tiramisu and coffee and headed out of the door to walk it all off barefoot along the seashore to pick up shells and small round stones. Pockets, tums and hearts full we headed off for Palermo.
